A Mom’s Guide to Pin Trading at Disneyland

A Mom’s Guide to Pin Trading at Disneyland

My babysitter/friend converted me into a pin trader. I am still learning the in’s and out’s, but with research and patience, I’ve managed to amass a sizable collection. It is an exciting can be expensive) hobby and I cannot wait till my kids are of age to join in on the fun!

So, first thing is first. What is pin trading? There is a really good explanation that I found through Traveling Mom. She has lists 5 essential tips on how to get started. Adding on to that list, I’d like to teach you 4 more things that I have learned along the way:

  • SCRAPPERS: This is something every newbie should be aware of. Some traders don’t really care if their pins are authentic or not, so you have the option to decide! You want to be vigilant and knowledgeable of what to look for, especially if you intend to trade with seasoned pin traders. I really like the article Disney Pins Blog posted about scrappers.
  • FANTASY PINS: These can artsy non official pins out in the market today. ACME holds a license to produce Disney character pins that are approved by the company. Other jumbo varieties that you may find on Etsy are not licensed and that factor should be specified in the seller’s description.
  • PIN RELEASES: For the die hard fan, WDW and DR monthly pin releases are pretty crazy. Special limited edition pins (LE 1000-4000) are released at different times of the month. Collectors line up at the crack of dawn to wait in line to purchase these pins! Depending on who is on the pin, some have been known to be sold out within hours of the release day. Also, the Disney Studio Store Hollywood releases a “Pin Trader’s Delight” where you can buy an ice cream special which includes a LE pin. This goes to my next point…
  • PIN PICKUPS: What’s a busy mom to do if she cannot (and will not) wait 3+hours (maybe, give or take) in line at a pin release? Commission someone to do the pick-up FOR you! There are a plethora of people willing and able to do the dirty work for you for a small fee. Get referrals and info here

That’s a lot of info right?! As I learn more, I’ll post about my experiences. For now… Here are a few of my favorite go-to resources online:

FYI ****Everyday at 5PM DR Grand California Adventure Lobby is a pin trading event with CM’s and other traders. It only lasts for an hour I believe.
